Not Your Grandma's Crochet

Have you always wanted to learn to crochet and never knew where to start? Let me help!

The crochet world is not a complicated one, but it is very vast! Many people will often ask me, 'where should I start?' The answer probably depends on the hooker (slap your dirty mind! It's not what you think it means!), but for me, it starts with a good hook, and yarn that is easy to work with. I wish I had known back when I first started, what I know now about hooks! I started with a standard aluminum size I/5.50mm hook. From there, I discovered hooks that have bamboo handles. These were great because they felt fuller in my hand. I didn't have as much soreness and cramping in my hand if I was working for long periods at a time. Now, I use hooks that are more ergonomic and I will never go back to the standard plain aluminum again.

My hook of choice is Amour which is made by Clover. Each size is color coated, making the size you need easy to spot when you have an obsession such as mine. These hooks relieve the stress on your hands and wrists allowing for an easier time crocheting. They can be purchased at your local craft store or online through your favorite craft vendor. You can purchase them individually or as a set. I would recommend starting off with the H/5.00 or I/5.50mm hook size. Once you are more comfortable crocheting and decide that you would like to branch out in your craft, then I would say to go ahead and purchase the entire set (or 3, but that's just me. Obsessed, remember).

Your next step is purchasing yarn. If you have ever walked into a craft store, I am sure you looked around the rainbow aisles wondering to yourself which yarn to choose. For now, we are going to keep it very basic. I would suggest using Red Heart Super Saver Yarn.

This yarn comes is a wide variety of colors and is easy to work with. For now, choose a color that isn't took dark; it is easier to see the stitches if it is a lighter color. Red Heart Super Saver yarn is not costly, is a very popular brand, and is easy to work with, making it a good yarn for those starting out.  Just as with the hooks, you can purchase this yarn at your local craft supply store or online.

Fun shopping tip: download the Retail Me Not ap on your phone, as well as the ap for your local craft store for some really awesome coupons.

Now get out there and find your color!
